Ryan Bingham caught my attention shortly after the release of his first album Mescalito. It struck a chord with me and quickly became one of the most frequently played discs in my iPod. It’s hard to say why I like his music so much. It’s difficult to imagine an artist with a life’s experience more different than mine. Bingham spent time on the rodeo circuit riding bull before becoming a singer-songwriter.

It was great, but before I talk about him I want to say a few words about his opening act, Jonny Burke. Well, the show at the Iron Horse was fantastic. I think a lot of it has to do with the venue. Bingham is at his best in a small venue where he can engage with and feed off the crowd. It was such an exciting show. He began the show with an acoustic guitar and harmonica and a quiet start. Then he really rocked the house. It was great. Ryan is an interesting performer. When he interacts with the audience he comes across as shy and unassuming. But when he steps behind his guitar and microphone, he’s larger than life. The songs are powerful and the band tight.

It seemed to me that my local NPR station, WBUR in Boston, had been giving undue attention to the findings of a Stanford University study of “Cognitive control in media multitaskers,” recently published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. I first heard it reported on one of the news programs, Morning Edition or All Things Considered. Then Talk of the Nation did a show on it. Then a nationally syndicated show produced by WBUR, On Point. Counting them up, that’s only three times the story was featured, but it seemed like more, perhaps because I found it so disconcerting.
Anyway, the study found that “heavy multitaskers” have trouble filtering distractions and switching tasks compared with those who do it less. In other words, those who multitask most are the least proficient at it.
As someone who is myself a heavy but not particularly proficient multitasker, I found that surprising, but possible. I had thought it was just me. But the study also found that frequent multitasking affects cognitive abilities across the board, and this I found worrying. Is multitasking making me stupid? In trying to become more efficient, am I not only being less efficient, but also less able to follow an argument and to construct and argument?
At least that might explain some of the postings in this blog when I go back and read them. Blame it on the multitasking.
Chronic media multitasking is quickly becoming ubiquitous, although processing multiple incoming streams of information is considered a challenge for human cognition. A series of experiments addressed whether there are systematic differences in information processing styles between chronically heavy and light media multitaskers. A trait media multitasking index was developed to identify groups of heavy and light media multitaskers. These two groups were then compared along established cognitive control dimensions. Results showed that heavy media multitaskers are more susceptible to interference from irrelevant environmental stimuli and from irrelevant representations in memory. This led to the surprising result that heavy media multitaskers performed worse on a test of task-switching ability, likely due to reduced ability to filter out interference from the irrelevant task set. iMapMyRide
iMapMyRide is an application from the folks at MapMyFitness.com. It’s a GPS application that maps your route as you ride, calculating speed, distance, elevation and other factors. All of this is then uploaded to the MapMyRide site, where there is a social networking component. You can share stories about your workouts, view other peoples and comment on them, set your goals, form groups, etc. You can download maps to Google Earth and there are tools for sharing the route in a website, blog or other social networking site. There are also Facebook and Google Gadgets plug ins. Though MapMyRun, MapMyWalk and others are separate applications, you don’t actually need them all, ad the applications give you a choice of which kind of workout you wish to upload.
There are additional features to the site that come with a paid membership. The Blackberry App is only available to premium subscribers, as are ad-free versions of the program. Premium members get discounts at events or on merchandise, too.
