This One, At Least, Is Short. Another Train Song List

"Long Black Train, by cindy47452

A while back I posted a couple lists of train songs. Then I stumbled across one of those songs about train songs. Finally, only about a week ago, taking into consideration suggestions that had continued to come in, I posted a new revised list. I thought for sure that would be it. Of course not. Here, dear reader, is yet another list.

The vast majority of train songs I’ve found are Country and Blues songs. But all of the lists include songs from many different genres, and that is true here, too. The first song is Barry Manilow‘s Border Train, and it is a typical Manilow ballad. That’s followed by Sarah McLachlan‘s Train Wreck, again typical McLachlan’s. Neither of those tunes is exactly crossover material, at least not as recorded here, and they are not country.

This list does have a good chunk of country and related artists on it. There’s a track is by Chely Wright, the Country superstar who recently came out as a lesbian. Both Marty Stuart and Doc Watson are Bluegrass artists, and Ryan Adams tends to defy genre, but probably best belongs in Alt-Country. Troy Olsen is a new face on the Country music scene, but he’s been around for a while as a songwriter. His voice could melt butter.

The list ends with The Weather Girls, who became disco legends for their hit “It’s Raining Men!” and an instrumental Jazz piece, Cool Train, by Fourplay. Once again, they are not all great songs. In fact, some of the songs on each of the lists might never have found their way to my ears were it not for this project, and I may never play them again. But all are worth a listen.

Trains are such an important part of our national psyche. So why don’t we have a decent commuter rail system? Go figure.

Keep sending train songs. Post them in the comments here. I’ve also found a few other lists on Rhapsody. Here are a few of my favorites:

So what’s my next topic? This was fun and I want to do another? Another means of travel? Trucks? Cars? Planes? Or something completely different?

  1. Ooo! I like that one! It’s new to me. Adds some variety to the list as well. I likevwhen lyrics and other information appear alongside the video, as well. Thanks!

  2. Going for the best song first. This one is a must here, from my favourite band. Everyone knows Africa, but what they don’t know is how great this band really is. A lot of people haven’t heard of Toto, but they were the band on Jackson’s Thriller. In fact in 1981 they were the band on Quincy Jones’ album The Dude, which won a grammy, and in ’82 they received 6 grammies for Toto IV, and then Thriller got 8 grammies in ’84. Human Nature was written by Steve Porcaro of Toto for the band, but was used for Jackson on Thriller.
