NITLE’s New Online Presence

Revised NITLE Site

Revised NITLE Site

Some of you may have already noticed, but NITLE’s web site has gotten a face lift or, more accurately, a radical redesign of the sort that would be worthy of an episode if anyone were ever to launch and “Extreme Web Makeover” series. I couldn’t be more pleased and I’m very grateful to the task force that coordinated this project for the new public face they have given us.

This is my personal blog and I don’t often use it to talk so much about work, but I can’t help myself, so let me point out just three things that, for me, are highlights of the new main site and its complementary presences.

I should point out that while we were asked for our opinions of the site at various points in it preparation, I was not part of the task force. So I am approaching the site as a user or visitor like you, not as a guide involved in its design who can tell you why things were set up the way they were. I am also expressing my opinions, which may not necessarily be representative of NITLE policy.

We might as well start at the main page. There is a lot of information presented on this page, and yet it is done clearly and in a manner that is easy to navigate and that quickly takes on into sought after information without multiple stops en route. If you are interested in something on the front page and you click on a link, more often than not you end up directly on a page containing the information you need, even if that click takes you out of the NITLE site.

That, in fact, is the other thing I like more about the front page. It sends a clear message from the start that NITLE is an organization that works in partnership with our participating colleges so the page itself presents a dialogue.
A lot of young men are seen feeling quite depressed when that takes place not knowing, sildenafil uk it will only make things worse. The pills acts like an anti-impotence way, which tadalafil buy this storefront on sale now aids men to enjoy their sexual life without any hindrances. Impotence has made people stressful and does not let them browse over here overnight shipping of cialis have a better life and that is the prime responsible factor in worsening our body parameters.
I also like that it brings together, right up front, all that is going on with NITLE. We’ve got some cool projects in the queue for the NITLE labs and we’ve got some good programming coming up, too. In the Daily NITLE Column you will find items from NITLE’s new blogs.

Liberal Education Today has been re-focused and revamped to become Liberal Education Tomorrow, fitting for a blog covering emerging technologies. Perspectives is geared toward the technology leadership at a liberal arts college. Techne, the one which I will be contributing to most regularly, is about integrating technology for teaching and learning at liberal arts colleges.

There are other things I like as well, but I said I would mention only a few. There are bugs and glitches, too. I’ve already pointed out two that are being corrected. But this is the world of information technology and everything is always a work in progress. That’s why things move forward at the pace they do. And that’s why we need you comments.

We’d all like to know what you think of these sites, so visit them and post your comments or contact our staff.

National Broadband Strategy Hearings

This is a clever little widget. It’s created to convey how major telecommunications corporations are using fake grassroots organizations as fronts to advance their agenda and block telecommunications reform.

It comes from FreePress.net. Free Press has criticized the FCC for its handling of its hearings regarding National Broadband Policy, saying the meetings have not been announced far enough ahead or through appropriate publicity vehicles so that the public knows they are happening and can show up.

The criticisms are valid, but it is also true that most people aren’t at all aware that there is a policy debate or that anything is at stake. It’s a complicated and confusing issue and the big media companies have all the resources to make their case. They control the airwaves, pipelines and broadcast networks the would be needed to carry an opposing viewpoint, an increasingly, the same media companies own print media outlets as well. There is an outstanding and enlightening tool for finding out which companies own which media on the website of the Columbia Journalism Review.

Take a look at the International Broadband Charts. You may be surprised to learn that the US is far from being the leader in Broadband technologies. Indeed, in general we pay more for slower network connections than quite a few other countries, ones that might surprise you. We are also lagging behind in terms of the rate of broadband penetration. These are facts. No politics are involved in producing these statistics, just empirical evidence. No wonder the administration of President Obama is concerned about our National Broadband Strategy.

They just need to do a better job of getting the public involved.

Was It Good for You? Let Me Check Your Facebook Page

The text below provides some statistics about “gadget-savvy online individuals” under the age of 35 surveyed on behalf of the website Retrevo.com.  The first percentage is shocking, the second frightening, the third not a bit surprising and the last, well, what’s the big deal?

The younger crowd is also quite keen on tweeting, texting, and checking Facebook after sex (36%), while driving (40%), while at work (64%), and when on vacation (65%).

via Young Social Mediaphiles: 36% Tweet and Check Facebook After Sex.

It isn’t so much the numbers themselves that are surprising.  The survey is, after all, a survey of gadget-savvy people,  so one would expect the numbers to be higher than they might in the general population.  So that 64% of respondents use these tools at work or on vacation seems reasonable.  In fact, it surprises me the number isn’t higher.

Tweeting, texting and Facebook?  That’s a lot of tools.  Increasingly people use one or more of those tools for work.  As for using them on vacation, they are called social networking tools, and socially is how most people started using them.  It is their use for business and professional purposes that is new.  So why wouldn’t they be used on vacation.   I like to be unplugged on vacation sometimes, but that’s because I work online.  Many people are thrilled by the possibility of posting their vacation snapshots while on vacation.  And , if family members went off to do different things during the day of a family vacation, it can be awfully handy to text them if you want to change the meeting place for dinner.

Erectile dysfunction can also be stated as impotence. viagra pfizer achat It is a natural aphrodisiac and boosts professional viagra immunity. In pfizer viagra online order to go through these reasons, you should be aware with erectile dysfunction first. For kids, it helps prevent asthma, ear infection, bed-wetting, amid other activities For adults, they are able to order cheap viagra http://djpaulkom.tv/dj-paul-lay-down-today/ with hold the erection for the sufficient amount of time. It’s the social networking after sex thing that boggles the mind.  Exactly what message does one post after sex?  Does one provide comments or ratings of the experience?  Or maybe the texting is just a substitute for the post-coital cigarette–something to do with the hands?  The group with this high percentage is under age 35.  Maybe some of the respondents are too young to drive, so they are texting someone for a ride?  I wonder what percentage post or text during?

That leaves only the driving to talk about.  Tell me more please.  Where were those numbers highest?  Certain states?  Cities?  Do they drive more at certain times of the day?  Do they use highways or byways more?  Tell me all you can.  ‘Cause I want to do all I can to be OFF THE ROAD whenever and wherever they are!

Models for Collaboration in Cultural Studies

Thursday, a week from today, I am chairing the next program in the special topics series I organize for NITLE, Tools for Teaching in the Global Age. The title for the program is Models for Collaborative Teaching in Cultural Studies: Working Across Campuses, and it should be both interesting and timely.

Inter-institutional collaboration allows an institution to access a much wider array of resources. The most obvious an common example of this is inter-libary loan, but it is equally possible in other sectors as well, administrative and even pedagogical. It is the last form of collaboration this session looks at. The three projects to be presented in this program were either components of or the primary subjects of academic courses and through them students gained access to expertise that was not on their campus, were exposed to viewpoints of students that were not their own and gained experience with something that is increasingly common in the workplaces they will encounter after they leave college, long distance collaboration.

Yet in no case was the essential classroom experience and high degree of teacher-student interaction that is so characteristic of the liberal arts college education compromised. Classess in one location interacted with classes elsewhere, in some cases overseas, within the context of a course at their home campus.

Especially important in the current economic climate, in all three cases the costs involved in the collaboration were quite low, for the most part taking advantage of resources already available at even the most poorly resourced institution. In short, relatively few resources where leveraged to multiply dividends.

Some Information on the State of Academic Freedom

Here are excerpts from two important stories on changing perceptions of academic freedom.

As Inside Higher Ed reported last month, a Ben-Gurion University political science professor, Neve Gordon published an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times, in Counterpunch and in the Guardian that endorsed a gradually expanding international boycott of Israel. In her response, also published in the LA Times, Ben-Gurion University’s president, Rivka Carmi ventured not only to castigate Gordon but also to redefine academic freedom in ways contrary to traditions of the American Association of University Professors.

With these very troubling ideas circulating in the United States, a clear need for the AAUP to address the story has arisen. That need is underlined by the fact that several American scholars writing about the Middle East have either lost their jobs or had their tenure cases challenged because of their scholarly or extramural publications. Statements by Carmi and other Israeli administrators thus have the potential to help undermine academic freedom not only in Israel but elsewhere. These are in every sense worldwide debates.

Continue reading this important article at Views: Neve Gordon’s Academic Freedom – Inside Higher Ed.

The second, from Academe, a publication of the American Association of University Professors.  In it Robert O’Neil, professor emeritus of law at the University of Virginia and director of the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression, surveys developments in the way we look at issues relating to academic freedom when it relates to online publication in all is forms and calls for a new policy on the matter.  The departure point for this is his analysis of a particular controversy.

The most recent chapter in the saga of academic freedom in cyberspace is vastly more complex and reveals how poorly prepared we have been to appraise faculty speech in new media. William Robinson, a sociologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, chose Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2009 to send a most unusual e-mail to all eighty students in his Sociology of Globalization class. Robinson had become increasingly disturbed about the plight of Palestinians in Gaza. The electronic message contained an accusation that Israel had committed war crimes in Gaza, arguably analogous to Nazi atrocities during the Holocaust. Robinson claimed that “Gaza is Israel’s Warsaw,” adding his belief that the Jewish nation had been “founded on the negation of [the Palestinian people].” Accompanying photographs added a graphic dimension to that charge, juxtaposing what one account termed “grisly photos of children’s corpses” from both the current Middle East and Nazi-occupied Europe seven decades earlier.
Adverse effects are more than one. http://hartbuildersinc.com/levitra-6428 levitra online Some simple practices and enhanced confidence may help the person getting sexual informative pharmacy shop buy viagra online happiness back on the way. Effective of viagra pfizer online Tadalafil on individual may vary a little. So, people are ready to spend good amount of money to debunk claims that homeopathy works, using a wide variety of misinformation tactics to instill a levitra 40 mg belief in the public that natural medicine is is not effective in some cases especially those that involve biological factors like a medical condition.
Several of Robinson’s students promptly brought the e-mail to the attention of the regional Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which wrote at once to express its deep concern to the professor himself, with copies to UCSB’s chancellor and the University of California system president. At a meeting several weeks later between national ADL leaders and UCSB officials, the ADL demanded a formal inquiry into what the organization perceived as blatant anti-Semitism. Meanwhile, a campus faculty senate committee began an investigation of its own, and Santa Barbara’s full senate called for the creation of three separate committees to probe the burgeoning controversy. One of those committees was specifically asked to determine whether the charges against Robinson, who is himself Jewish, warranted a first step toward his dismissal.

Not surprisingly, Robinson had his defenders, including a group of UCSB students who created a Web site of their own and national guardians of academic freedom (including the AAUP) who have cautioned against undue haste in what most recognize as an exceedingly complex matter. Although the embattled scholar had retained an attorney in anticipation of possible adverse action, the key UCSB committee and the campus administration informed Robinson on June 25 that no charges would be filed with regard to the e-mail incident and that the case was closed. Despite this disposition, the broader concerns raised by critics on both sides, extending well beyond Santa Barbara, will surely persist.

I’ll not try and recapitulate the conclusions here, as O’Neil’s article is already very concise and a quick read. If the issues interests you, I’d suggest reading it.  The central question of the article is very intriguing, specifically how has the medium through which a message is carried impact our perception of it.

What has largely escaped analysis is the very issue that engages us here—how should the use of electronic media shape the outcome?

You’ll find a lot to think about in these two short postings!

Iranian Blogger Said to Be in Solitary Confinement – The Lede Blog – NYTimes.com

Violations of Press Freedom should be of concern to us all.  When journalist are intimidated, then authoritarian forces can act with impunity. Here is the case of one Iranian blogger.

On Friday, an Iranian blogger and human rights activist, Mojtaba Samienejad, reported that a fellow blogger who had been working as a journalist for a reformist newspaper, Fariba Pajouh, has been in solitary confinement in Tehran’s Evin Prison for three weeks.

Posthumous Apology to Gay Code Breaker Who Helped Defeat Nazi Germany

In what so obviously seems like the right thing to do, Great Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown issued a public apology to Alan Turing, a mathematician and computer pioneer whose work as a code breaker helped defeat Nazi Germany. Mr. Turing was convicted of “gross indecency” in 1952 for having a homosexual affair and was forced to choose between prison and chemical castration via injections of female hormones. Two years later, he killed himself by biting into a poisoned apple.

In his statement, Mr. Brown said:

Turing was a quite brilliant mathematician, most famous for his work on breaking the German Enigma codes. It is no exaggeration to say that, without his outstanding contribution, the history of World War II could well have been very different. He truly was one of those individuals we can point to whose unique contribution helped to turn the tide of war. The debt of gratitude he is owed makes it all the more horrifying, therefore, that he was treated so inhumanely. In 1952, he was convicted of ‘gross indecency’ — in effect, tried for being gay. His sentence — and he was faced with the miserable choice of this or prison — was chemical castration by a series of injections of female hormones. He took his own life just two years later.

Thousands of people have come together to demand justice for Alan Turing and recognition of the appalling way he was treated. While Turing was dealt with under the law of the time and we can’t put the clock back, his treatment was of course utterly unfair and I am pleased to have the chance to say how deeply sorry I and we all are for what happened to him.

Given this kind of thing, how shocking is it that in the US gays are still being discharged from the armed forces if they are gay, including translators of Arabic, Persian and other languages.  This in spite of the fact that eight years after the attacks of September 11, 2001, we are still hampered in the struggle against terrorism by a lack of qualified translators.

Innovative Practices for Challenging Times

An message from Michael Nanfito and NITLE.

In March 2009, five exemplary projects from the liberal arts community received the NITLE Community Contribution Award, which includes an opportunity to publish a case study with Academic Commons. Today, I’m happy to announce the publication of “Innovative Practices for Challenging Times,” a new issue of Academic Commons that showcases these projects and gives readers a chance to find out how their leaders made them happen.

Articles featured in this issue of Academic Commons include:
