What Richmond Needs (Part One)

Sidewalks–We have them downtown and in some of the older suburbs, but like much of America, they ceased to be a feature of new neighbrohoods decades ago. Why? I guess we just gave into to the diea that we would all drive everywhere, be it a mile or a block. So now that we are walking again, out of concern for our health or the environment of because we’ve realized we can’t spend all day in front of a tv, computer or video game, we are doing it in the street. Not very safe. Our children learn to ride a bicycle in the street! In the suburbs the banks, pharmacy, library, school or grocery story may be well within walking distance, but you can’t actually walk there safely. We need sidewalks, for our health, for the environment, for our safety, for our lawns, and so that we can get to know our neighbors again. More and, more importantly, better bike paths–We don’t have many and those we have start with and those we do start and end in the middle of nowhere. I can think of one particular bike path near my family home that starts about a football field’s length from a busy intersection, ends about two football fields from an even busier one, starts up again about two miles after that. This particular trail also seems to serve no real purpose. I can’t see how it gets people to or from jobs or recreational areas. I have no idea what purpose it serves.

A better, specifically more powerful public radio station–We have WCVE, which plays a lot of Classical and Jazz music. It’s our major NPR station. WNRN comes out of Charlottesville and is a wonderful non-commercial rock/progressive station. WRIR is our best station in my opinion because it plays a lot of news and public information programming. But it’s signal is terribly weak. Most of the time I can’t get it tuned in on my car radio. So two suggestions for WRIR: think about picking up The Story with Dick Gordan and undertake a major capital campaign to raise money for whatever it takes to boost your signal. The station ought to come in clear throughout the city. Theater–What happened here? I remember a lot more going on about a decade ago. Why aren’t touring companies of Broadway shows coming through anymore? What happened to the company that used to be based at the Virginia Museum? It seemed, too, that one heard more about productions at the local universities. I assume these are still happening but it’s hard to find out about them. ]]>
