I am so reluctant to admit, but July is coming to a close. I am not a winter person, so I spend all summer in denial that it will ever end. Sadly, it is foolish to do so. Today is the last day of July and there is no use in denying it. So I am posting a July playlist to mark the passing of this wonderful summer month. Alas, we hardly knew ye!
As usual, this playlist is composed of songs that are in current rotation on my iPhone. They are what comes up when I play it on shuffle. That doesn’t mean they are new songs. Many are quite the opposite. The only exceptions to the rule are that I only included the first song that popped up by each artist, and it had to be something that is available on Rhapsody. Not Ready To Love – Rufus Wainwright You know, the way Wainwright is usually described when people need a pithy statement about his is really reductionist and really gives short shrift to the music, so let me just say that this is a song from his album “Release the Stars.”
Ballet For A Rainy Day – XTC This song makes me think I’m in high school. I hated high school. I listened to a lot of moody music.
10,000 Chinese Walk Into A Bar – Robert Earl Keen From the newest album by this Texan singer/songwriter.
The Shrew – Beirut You know, you kinda just have to listen to this. You’ll like it immediately, be intrigued, or break out in hives.
Tired Of Being Sorry – Enrique Iglesias – What can I say? I like Enrique. I’m not ashamed to admit it.
Silver Palomino – Bruce Springsteen If the list has more than 10 songs on it and it is truly a random selection of whatever is on my iPhone, there’s probably going to be a Bruce song. Venn Diagram – Lisa Hannigan Irish lass I discovered on tour with Jason Mraz. I liked her doing Lucky with him better than the Colby Caillait version, to be honest.
Semetik omri – Cheba Maria Maghrebi Rai
Ana Oualache – Cheb Mami Star of Algerian Rai. The chorus in this song is amazing. In the song the singer is wondering why misfortune has befallen him, and the chorus sings works of hope.
Boogie Blues – Anita O’Day A great Jazz diva.
And now, because I want to go back to pretending summer will never end, here’s just a handful of Summer Songs that popped into my head. Mostly upbeat fun stuff. I left off the Beach Boys! And a lot of others. It always happens that I keep thinking of people and songs after creating the list. But the Beach Boys are probably the most obvious hole!
