The remains of Imad Ben Ziaten, the 31 year old paratrooper who was gunned down by the “Toulouse Killer”  were laid to rest in Morocco this past Tuesday.  His family had requested he be burried in his hometown of Md’iq a short distance from the city of Tetouan in Northern Morocco.

The other alleged victims of the assassin were a rabbi and he three young children.  The murder of children is always shocking.  What could a 3 year old, or even a 7 year old have done to justify being murdered in cold blood.  That is what is so gut-wrenching about the story of Robert Bales, the US soldier who committed the massacres in Afghanistan on March 11.  We want to see our men in uniform as heroes, to the point that we overlook a lot.  But shooting innocents at home, that is only possible when the enemy has been completely dehumanized.

That is why it is so regrettable that the American media has completely neglected the ancestry of three of the four French paratroopers killed by a deluded, brainwashed, 23 year-old radical who saw them as traitors just for wearing a French uniform.  Those men died because they knew they could be both Muslims who believe in God and that Mohamed is his Prophet, and yet still fight for Liberte, Fraternite, Egalite, and France.  I’m assuming they were believers, but I don’t know their hearts.  Because that was one of the freedoms they were standing up for.

I do know that  radical Muslims like Mohamed Merah and his allies in the French right wing are wrong about Islam and the West.  Yes, though they despise one another and will not eat at the same table, indeed would sooner see one another dead than do so, that is precisely what makes them allies.  They believe in a perpetual war of civilizations, or at least one that will be fought until there is a victor.  The problem with that theory is that in a world in which the human race possesses the weapons to destroy itself and perhaps even it’s plant several times over, it’s far more likely we’ll see the eradication of our species before we see a victor.  And yet there is no inherent conflict between Islam and the West.  Indeed, it’s nearly impossible to tell where one civilization ends and the other begins.  Plenty of conflicts have been created throughout history, and militant Islamist and radical Christians are doing so again, but that doesn’t mean full scale civilizational war is inevitable.  In 2012, most of the human race is far to smart to fall into that trap.
