But as Senator Lieberman and his fellow moderates push the Senate’s massive health bill toward the right, the hard political fact is that it is liberals, not Lieberman, who may soon have to make a tough decision.

It now appears possible that the legislation might not include anything that resembles a public option – government-run insurance intended to compete with private firms. If that’s the case, will liberals vote for it anyway? After all, many Democrats on the more leftward side of the party have long insisted that the public option is something that a health bill absolutely, positively must have.

Let’s be perfectly clear about what is at stake here. At this moment Democrats comfortably control the House, the Senate and the White House. The chances of this happening again in the near future are slim to none. Unemployment is still very high and though many economist tell us we are starting to see a turn around, it doesn’t feel that way for most people I know. Moreover, the President just committed 30,000 soldiers to Afghanistan. Tragically, some of them will get killed. The party in power almost always loses seats in the mid-term elections. Liberals in government may not have this power again for a very long time and polls show the majority of American support a strong bill with a public option.

It is my opinion that is is time for the Senators to stop their back room bargaining and bring this bill to the floor for debate. We, the people, deserve to see who’s on what side. And if there is a filibuster, we should see that, too. Whether Liberal, Conservative or somewhere in between, Americans feel strongly about this issue and we should see the camel trading that is going on.

And you, Senator Reid, should not allow any provision in this bill to be held hostage by an independent who has left the party. Use your leverage, those precious committee chairs. Leiberman may vote however he wishes, but to block, legislation, that is another matter all together.

This is our last chance to get the reform we need. Flood your Congressional Rep’s and your Senators offices with messages. Call or write the media. talk to your friends so they understand. Because whatever we don’t get now we may never see.
