Mozart of the Pickpockets on YouTube

It is a wonderful development that you can now see so many award winning short films online. I am a full fledged cinophile and I do believe something is lost when a film that was shot for the big screen is watched on the small screen, let alone the event smaller screen of YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion or other sites. But other the other hand, every year I pay attention to the Oscars, the Golden Globes, Cannes, Venice, and all the other film festivals. The short films always sound wonderful, but until recently it was unlikely I’d see more of most of them than the clips they show in the telecast.

ITunes started making Oscar nominated short films available about three or four years ago at a very reasonable price, and that is how I first saw Mozart of the Pickpockets, a French film that won the 2007 Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film. Now you can watch it on YouTube for no charge at all. Directed by Philippe Pollet-Villard, it’s a wonderful little film with a delightful performance by Matteo Razzouki-Safardi at the virtuoso pickpocket. I’ll not spoil it for you by giving you too much of the plot. Just enjoy it.
